Methodology

How the gold price calculator works

Net grams × nominal price per gram for the selected karat

One pennyweight is 1.55517384 grams. One troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams. Different karats should be weighed and calculated separately.

Gold calculator questions

How is gold value calculated?

Net weight is converted to grams and multiplied by the observed nominal price for the selected karat.

Is the estimate what a gold buyer will pay?

No. It estimates theoretical metal value. An advertised quote and the final payout are separate amounts.

Should stones be included in the weight?

No. Use the estimated net weight of the gold only. Stones, springs and non-gold parts can change the assessed weight.

What do 10K, 14K and 18K mean?

Karat describes purity. Common US marks include 10K or 417, 14K or 585, and 18K or 750.
